Solar PV installations have been introduced to provide electricity and lighting at Uganda Technical College (UTC) in Kichwamba. This is an eco-friendly and cheap way to improve the campus facilities and deal with the electricity problems in the area. Staff members from UTC Kichwamba have been trained at Makerere University in the field of renewables and they have been able to develop the street lights and install the solar panels in the research centre themselves.
UTC Kichwamba is a government institution located in the Kabarole District in the Rwenzori Region of western Uganda. Like many government institutions in Uganda, it is greatly affected by power shortage and fluctuations of an inadequate energy supply.
Furthermore, UTC Kichwamba has selected two promising students for scholarships: Chrisolight Bwambale for a diploma in Mechanical Engineering and David Sunday for a diploma in Electrical Engineering. They have performed well in the academic year of 2018/2019 and hope to graduate next year.
The equipment and materials, training at Makerere and the scholarships have been made possible by the Hanze University Foundation.
