Hanze employees volunteer for NCMTC

Amount: € 39655

Location: Bomani, Kenya

At the end of February, 21 employees of Hanze University of Applied Sciences will travel to Kenya. They will dedicate themselves to North Coast Medical Training College, which was able to make a start 5 years ago through the fundraising campaign during the Lustrum of Hanze University of Applied Sciences in 2013. NCMTC has grown to nearly 400 students and employs 23 Kenyan teachers. During the visit of Hanze University of Applied Sciences employees, they will commit themselves to the following:

  • Skill-orientated education. A group of 10 Hanze teachers will support the 23 NCMTC teachers in carrying out competence-oriented education. The NCMTC teachers are currently following an online course on competence-based education, but do not have access to practical examples in Kenya. Hanze teachers will share their own experiences and, together with the NCMTC, look at how best to implement competence-oriented education for Kenyan students.

  • Floor of the Hanze guesthouse & student accommodation. A group of 11 Hanze employees will roll up their sleeves and a 2e building a floor on the Hanze guesthouse on campus. This building is not finished yet, due to lack of financial resources. The guesthouse is currently occupied by students, because there is no room left in the student housing on campus. In addition to the 2e floor on the Hanzehuis, the construction staff will also build extra rooms on campus to create more housing for the students.

In order to pay for the building materials, the participants of the trip are busy with various fundraisers! The floor on the guesthouse and the extra student hostel could be realized with €40,000. The participants set up fun promotions: you could order wine, beer and cards for charity!

microscopes for NCMTC van Hanze Institute for Life Sciences and Technology

The Hanze Institute for Life Sciences and Technology has purchased more modern microscopes for students to work on. The “old” microscopes were no longer used, but they still work very well! Because it would be a shame to let them gather dust in the closet, they are now being donated to North Coast Medical Training College so that the students in Kenya can use them.

The target amount for the employee trip to Kenya has been achieved!

It has been a busy six months, but we have worked hard to reach the target amount of € 40,000! Through fantastic collaborations within the Hanze University Groningen, commitment and enthusiasm of the participants.
We have listed all donations:

– €3982.12 in personal gifts,
– almost €11,000 through the sale of wine (partly made possible by the Logistics Center of Hanze University Groningen!),
– €750 through the specially published children's book 'Logeerbeer', by participant Corine Seelen,
– €1317.66 through a market in Stedum,
– €150 by selling soup,
– €650 by selling lego bricks and raspberries,
– €9000 donation from Wilde Ganzen,

This is a total amount of €26,454.78!!!!

The Hanze University Foundation originally budgeted to sponsor an amount of €20,000 (half of the total target amount), to supplement the total to €40,000. With a proceeds of €26,204.78, the total amount has been amply achieved!

Due to the extra space created by the success of the fundraising by the participants, the Hanze University Foundation will invite two lecturers from NCMTC to participate in the summer school (in May and June 2018) in the themes Healthy Aging, at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. They can also take this knowledge back to Kenya. And so we will also ensure that the amounts that are still trickling in even now also benefit NCMTC.

We are very impressed by the commitment, success and warmth of all donors! Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this.
