Gift Mwaegwa is the head of the nutrition department at North Coast Medical Training College and was matched with Anja Bandringa during the 2022 Hanze staff trip.
“Anja is an expert in the skills part of preparing diet, which is why this exchange has been very insightful. We have compared the food and diets in the Netherlands with the ones in Kenya and have determined what we have in common and what is different. What is shocking that there is a lot of over nutrition in the Netherlands. This is more rare here in Kenya. In Kenya we have more under nutrition, which is not common in the Netherlands. In terms of the programs, the ones in the Netherlands are more specialized, while in Kenya they are more general.”
“During the staff trip we had a live connection with students from the Hanze University. I hope the virtual sessions via teams or a different platform like whatsapp can continue. This is a very nice way of interacting that opens up the students. It is beneficial for the students both at North Coast and Hanze to talk to each other. We also have a lot of nutrition cases here that students in the Netherlands could work on for their internship or thesis. This is also beneficial from a cultural perspective for both parties.”
