“This opportunity also opened me up to traveling and learning new cultures, which is paramount to stretching one’s horizons”

Thobela Mfeti was a student at the TSIBA Business School in South Africa and received a 3 month scholarship for an internship at Animal Lovers in Hoogeveen. She is now a Manager Research Analyst and has ambitions to start her own business in the financial industry.

“My experience in Groningen taught me how to work hard and play hard, which is very important to achieve life balance. From a personal perspective, this opportunity also opened me up to traveling and learning new cultures, which is paramount to stretching one’s horizons.

In 2010, while studying towards my Bachelor of Business Administration at TSIBA Business School in Cape Town, I received a scholarship from Hanze University Foundation for a 3-month exchange programme. Thanks to the scholarship, I worked for a private equity company called El Ninjo; my work focused on analyzing one of their subsidiary companies called Animal Lovers. Years later, the owner of El Ninjo came to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa to finalize one of the deals I initiated with my research.

Fast forward to 2019, I am a Manager Research Analyst now at Provident Professional Society (PPS). I am also the main breadwinner in my family. In the future, I would like to start my business in the financial industry. Focusing on providing financial advice and financial education targeted at the black community. I feel like our community is not building generational wealth and South Africa, in general, has the lowest savings rates in the world.”
